ABOUT US

New Zealand Cadet Forces

The New Zealand Cadet Forces (NZCF) is a dynamic, uniformed organisation that provides military-based leadership, personal development, and operational training for individuals aged 13 to 20. Specifically, it comprises three branches, each aligned with a corresponding division of the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF)—namely, the Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF), the New Zealand Army, and the Royal New Zealand Navy (RNZN). In addition, the NZCF offers a comprehensive five-year training curriculum and national courses further provide specialised training and qualifications. Sea Cadet Corps

The Sea Cadet Corps (SCC), commonly known as Navy Cadets, was first formed in 1929 and is the arm of the NZCF aligned with the Royal New Zealand Navy (RNZN), which is why we have similar uniforms, rank structure and training. A lot of the training, customs and traditions undertaken by the Navy Cadets align with that of the RNZN. Our training programme includes leadership, navigational skills, sailing, ropework, drill, firearm training, first aid and more. The Sea Cadet motto is ‘Ready Aye Ready’.

Dolphins

We also offer a Dolphin program for children aged 10 to 13 years old. In this program, they learn the same skills as cadets but at a beginner level, including first aid and navigation. Consequently, this early exposure provides a smoother transition for those who later wish to become cadets, as they will already have a solid foundation in the organisation and unit routines.

Officers

Officers are crucial for building leadership skills and mentoring younger cadets. They handle daily operations and training, ensuring activities run smoothly and safely. Adults aged 20 and over are invited to learn about becoming an officer and supporting local youth. If you have experience in youth work or maritime fields, contact us for more information.

Unit Support Committee

The Unit Support Committee (USC) for Training Ship Diomede plays a key role in supporting cadet operations. They actively fundraise, manage finances, and organise paperwork. Furthermore, the USC also coordinates essential events, including training camps and parades, thus ensuring cadets have the necessary equipment and supplies. By streamlining communication between cadet leaders, parents, and the community, they enhance the cadet experience and allow cadets to focus on developing leadership, discipline, and teamwork skills.
