What we offer
NZCF Training Overview
The New Zealand Cadet Forces (NZCF) offers a nationally coordinated five-year training programme that provides unique challenges and opportunities. This programme allows every cadet to gain knowledge and develop skills in various areas. It is designed to guide cadets from basic or introductory levels to advanced levels of knowledge and skills over the four years, covering a wide range of subjects. What we offer at T.S Diomede is a combination of NZCF skills and Sea Cadet Corps skills in maritime and sailing.

Sailing
Cadets learn the fundamentals of sailing, including boat handling, rigging and safety. Through hands-on practice, they develop confidence and proficiency, mastering skills that can lead to a Coxswain Qualification where they can lead the crew.

Leadership & Teamwork
Leadership and teamwork are key Cadet Forces principles. Team activities foster a strong sense of camaraderie, through effective cooperation and communication. They gain leadership roles as they climb the ranks.

First Aid
All cadets receive First Aid training throughout their five-year training programme. Cadets learn basic first-aid skills, including wound care, patient assessment, and casualty evacuation scenarios.

Marksmanship
Cadets first learn to handle firearms responsibly with .22 Marlin XT rifles. This training emphasizes safety, proper handling techniques, and marksmanship fundamentals before being fired on a controlled range.

Drill & Ceremonial
Cadets practice marching, formations, and ceremonial procedures. This training enhances their attention to detail and ability to work as part of a cohesive unit.

Navigation
Our navigation training equips cadets with essential safe and effective maritime travel skills. Cadets learn to read charts, use compasses, and plot courses.

More Opportunities
In addition to the training mentioned above, there are still many opportunities available to cadets. These include ship and base visits within the NZDF, various competitions, and annual ceremonial occasions such as Anzac Day. Moreover, you can also attend a variety of courses to further your training.

Courses
As you become more experienced as a cadet, you’ll gradually begin to take on extra responsibilities. Furthermore, you’ll have additional opportunities to attend local and national courses to develop your skills. These include both promotional courses and specific skill training courses.

Camps
Camps are held throughout the year and can range from training to fun weekends. These camps are integral to the cadet experience at TS Diomede, offering hands-on learning to foster a strong sense of camaraderie and achievement among participants.

International Exchanges
The New Zealand Cadet Forces (NZCF) offers international exchanges, allowing cadets to engage in cultural and training experiences abroad. Currently, the Navy Cadets exchange with three countries annually, usually the USA, Australia and one other member nation.
